What's your name, where are you from, and what do you do?
My name is Anne, and I am from Denton. I recently retired to become fulltime caregiver for my sister during a serious illness. I worked at a Pharmaceutical Company in Delaware as a Sr. Manager. My family is relocating from Delaware and live full-time here in Denton for retirement and so my sister can attend the Day Program in Ridgely.
Who is your sibling, and what kind of disability do they have?
My sibling's name is Marcie and she is 50. She has Down Syndrome and has resided with me & my family for 12 years after my father took ill. She is low functioning about the age of 8 year old, but can complete tasks independently.
What do you hope to gain from the network of MD sibs?
I hope to learn about resources, where to obtain information which is correct & current. Marcie is in DDA, but assistance in getting funding etc. is limited. Marcie is private pay in MD and probably be for awhile. I am weighing the pro's & con's of moving forward for funding.
What is the biggest challenge you have with your sibling right now?
The biggest challenge is me being the caregiver/guardian/friend. Marcie is dependent on me as a parent role and worries that I will be sick. We have a large family but since I retired, it feels the rest of the family lives got to move on and mine is Marcie. Love her dearly, but being together all the time except when she is not at the Program does get a bit long at times.
What resources does your sibling have currently?
We are private pay, but do have a resource provider from DDA. I need to move her from Delaware status to Maryland status. Doesn't appear to be a set easy process in doing so without consequences.
Any other info you'd like to share?
I look forward to getting to know the other siblings!
