What's your name, where are you from, and what do you do?
My name is Rebecca, and I am from Towson. I am currently working full time on a grant with the state, working part time as a personal support person for a woman with disabilities, and am in graduate school.
Who is your sibling, and what kind of disability do they have?
My siblings names are Josh and Shaina. I am one of 5 children, with Josh as the oldest, then me, Sarah, Shaina, and Megan. Both have Asperger's but only Josh has a formal diagnosis. When Josh was diagnosed as being on the spectrum, Megan was also diagnosed with Retinoblastoma, cancer of the eye, so most of my childhood focus was on Megan's illness and Josh's diagnosis. Dynamics are changing more now that we are all growing up.
What do you hope to gain from the network of MD sibs?
I hope to connect with other siblings who are experiencing similar struggles and learn strategies that can help me in my transition to more of a caregiver role.
What is the biggest challenge you have with your sibling right now?
We are not having too many challenges currently. Shaina is applying to colleges and we are encouraging her in her pursuits but know that she probably cannot go to a school too far away.
Josh is on his own and working but struggling in the relationships category. He is having trouble finding people to date that understand him and gets upset easily when the relationships don't work out. He had some trouble with a long distance relationship but has recently tried dating more locally.
What resources does your sibling have currently?
He does not use any resources. When he graduated from high school, he decided he didn't want to or need the resources offered to him. The only resources he really uses are things I tell him about, and only if he is interested.
Any other info you'd like to share?
I look forward to getting to know the other siblings! If anyone needs any more information about the group, feel free to send me a message and I will be glad to get you what you need.
