What's your name, where are you from, and what do you do?
My name is Noah, and I am from Potomac. I am currently doing research, and plan to go to graduate school.
Who is your sibling, and what kind of disability do they have?
My sibling's name is Micah, and he had meningitis as a baby, leaving him with permanent brain damage. Since it was an acquired brain injury, he doesn't fit into a specific category of disability. He's right on the IQ line of what is considered "mentally retarded," and has limitations in his ability to control impulses. He is easily influenced by others. In general, Micah is a sweet caring person, but can be extremely defiant and not listen to logic or reason if his beliefs contradict reality.
What do you hope to gain from the network of MD sibs?
I hope to learn about resources we can use to help Micah, as well as connect with other siblings who are experiencing similar struggles. I'm excited to have this forum, as I think it will help us learn about unique resources in our state that we can use to help our loved ones!
What is the biggest challenge you have with your sibling right now?
The biggest challenge is to get him stable enough so that we are not constantly entering crises with him. We are hoping to find something for him to do during the day, so that he doesn't obsess about leaving. It's hard, because he seems to resist the help we give him, but doesn't understand the consequences of his behavior. We're struggling to take care of him, so hopefully we will learn some ideas/resources from this forum!
What resources does your sibling have currently?
He has DDA funding, and lives in disability housing in Towson, MD.
Any other info you'd like to share?
I look forward to getting to know the other siblings!
